OLD PRESLEY POST OFFICE
A mile and one-half east of Hiawassee, Georgia on State Road 75 south from US 76, is the area known as Presley. The first Presley post office was in a bedroom of William J. Presley’s home appointed postmaster June 20th, 1899. His son, Julius W. took over 12/01/1900 till April 4th, 1904. Allen Adams who had a general merchandise store added the post office service from 1904 to 1928 at the corner of Hwy 75 and Streak Hill. Allen’s son Chelsie became acting postmaster then postmaster on May 28th, 1928. Cecil Taft Adams succeeded his brother Chelsie as postmaster on 2/27/32. He discontinued the family store and built the surviving structure where he and his wife Nadine ( maiden name Wilson ?) Adams helped sell stamps, money orders and the like. The Eisenhower administration closed it on 10/31/60, following this Hiawassee began rural free delivery. Cecil Adams became an employee of the Hiawassee post office running a rural route from which he retired on October 13th, 1963.
